48 Hours in Milan: The Ultimate Guide to Eating, Drinking and Exploring Like a Local

Milan is not just a fashion capital. It is a city of contrasts, where ancient churches stand next to cutting-edge design studios, and where a perfectly crafted Negroni at aperitivo hour can feel like a religious experience. If you only have 48 hours in Milan, this guide will help you make every moment count — eating, drinking and moving through the city exactly like a Milanese would.

Day 1 Morning: Start Where the City Started

Begin at Piazza del Duomo. Yes, it is touristy — but the Duomo itself is genuinely one of the most impressive Gothic cathedrals in the world. Climb to the rooftop terraces for a panoramic view of the city and, on clear days, a glimpse of the Alps on the horizon. Arrive early (before 9am) to beat the crowds.

From there, head to the Brera neighbourhood. This is where Milan shows its romantic, bohemian side: cobbled streets, art galleries, flower stalls and excellent coffee bars. Grab a cappuccino and a cornetto at one of the traditional bars — stand at the counter like a local and you will save money too.

Day 1 Afternoon: Art, Design and the Navigli

In the afternoon, visit the Pinacoteca di Brera, one of Italy’s finest art museums, housing masterpieces by Raphael, Caravaggio and Mantegna. Alternatively, if you are more drawn to contemporary design, the Triennale di Milano is just a short walk away in the Parco Sempione area.

As the sun starts to lower, make your way to the Navigli district — Milan’s canal quarter. Once an industrial zone, it is now one of the liveliest evening destinations in the city. The golden hour light on the water is genuinely beautiful.

Day 1 Evening: Aperitivo Time

Aperitivo is not just a drink — it is a social ritual, and Milan invented it. From around 6pm, bars across the Navigli and Isola neighbourhoods offer free food with the purchase of a drink. Budget around €8–12 for a Spritz or Negroni, and you have effectively covered dinner.
If you are staying at Ostello Bello, our bar is one of the best places in the city to experience aperitivo — and with the +BELLO Club, you can access exclusive discounts on your stay and special bar offers.

Day 2 Morning: Markets and Hidden Neighbourhoods

Start your second day at the Mercato di Porta Romana or the Mercato dell’Esquilino. Then explore the Isola neighbourhood — still slightly off the tourist trail, increasingly hip, with street art, independent coffee shops and a young creative crowd. The Bosco Verticale towers are right nearby and are genuinely one of the most photographed buildings in Europe.

Day 2 Afternoon: Leonardo’s Milan

No visit to Milan is complete without seeing The Last Supper. Santa Maria delle Grazie is where Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece lives — but you must book tickets well in advance, as daily visitor numbers are strictly limited. If you cannot get in, the exterior of the church is still beautiful and the surrounding neighbourhood is calm and charming.

End your 48 hours with a sunset Spritz back in the Navigli or on the rooftop terrace of one of the city’s many design bars — and remember that Milan rewards slow, curious exploration more than it rewards rushing.
