Free Rome: The Unmissable Sights That Cost Nothing
Some of Rome’s greatest attractions are completely free. The Pantheon is free to enter. The Vatican Museums are free on the last Sunday of every month, though queues can be extraordinary. The Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Campo de’ Fiori and a walk along the Via Appia Antica cost absolutely nothing. All of Rome’s major basilicas, including San Giovanni in Laterano and Santa Maria Maggiore, are free.
Eating Well on a Budget in Rome
Avoid any restaurant within 200 metres of a major tourist site — prices can be double or triple what you would pay two streets away. Instead, look for trattorias frequented by locals, with handwritten menus and no tourist photos on the wall.
For a quick and cheap lunch, try a supplì (fried rice ball) or pizza al taglio — budget around €2–4 per slice. Mercato Testaccio is one of Rome’s best covered markets and a fantastic place to eat cheaply and well.
Transport Tips
Buy a 24-hour or 48-hour public transport pass rather than single tickets. Rome’s metro is limited to two main lines, but buses and trams cover the entire city. Walking is often the best option in the historic centre.
