Here there is a good concentration of books, music, culture and good food. All excellent sources of inspiration.
It’s not simple to convey the influence a place such as Santeria had on Milan: it played a fundamental role in changing the mindset of young Milanese people, in teaching them that there are some places where the hustle and bustle of the city just has to stay out of the door, places to go and spend some hours studying, working, discovering new books, new music, new people, leaving all the rest behind. Santeria was probably the first multi-functional place, or factory, in Milan.

Since it’s a place with so many things to do, to see, to eat, we asked Andrea Pontiroli, manager and co-founder, to tell us its story. “Santeria was conceived by fifteen cultural operators with the aim to create a space where art and culture would be the main pillars. The project took shape in March 2011, the day the location in via Paladini 8 was inaugurated after a complete requalification of the building: at the centre there’s a bar bistro and a courtyard to work, watch shows and relax in the middle of the city, feeling like you’re abroad. Beside the bar, there’s a co-working space, a room for exhibitions and music, a record store and some offices dedicated to graphics and web design. In these years we have tried to offer a high number of different cultural events in Santeria, so as to contribute to the cultural life of the neighborhood”.

For an area of the city such as Ortica, which is not exactly the heart of movida in Milan, Santeria had en essential role: it gave a new self-perception to the neighborhood, that lately has attracted many young people. Santeria is a place designed to spend many hours in, a place designed by people who know their city really well, and that’s probably the reason why the activities that take place there are in perpetual change, every hour, every day – just like Milan and its citizen.
