Not many people know that the remains of the Three Kings are preserved in this Basilica and even fewer people know the strange story that brought them here.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Only recently, it turned out that the history of the Three Kings was\u00a0just a fake-news. It was traditionally believed that Gasparre, Melchiorre and\u00a0Baldassarre were\u00a0three wealthy sovereigns who, once known about Christ\u2019s birth,\u00a0decided to walk towards Bethlehem full of gifts. The thing was, halfway through\u00a0they met Erode\u00a0and spilled the story, accidentally causing the blind wrath that\u00a0would kill all the newborns in the region. It is even believed that Erode had\u00a0recruited the Kings as\u00a0spies, asking them to geo-localize Jesus and then report\u00a0to him, but thanks to the interference of an angel no one told a thing.<\/p>\n

Actually, it\u2019s not sure those were the\u00a0real Kings\u2019 names, nor they came from\u00a0Persia, India and Arabia, nor they followed a shooting star. Be that as it may,\u00a0in Milan we have a piece of that story. In\u00a0Basilica di Sant\u2019Eustorgio,\u00a0some of the Kings\u2019 relics\u00a0are guarded, or at least the heavy sarcophagus that carried them.\u00a0It seems the cart transporting it was so\u00a0heavy that the oxen couldn\u2019t take it\u00a0anymore, so they stopped in Porta Ticinese before reaching their destination.\u00a0Eustorgio, who was bishop of Milan and therefore\u00a0quite powerful, decided it was\u00a0no problem: if the relics couldn\u2019t go to the Basilica, then the Basilica would\u00a0go to the relics. He had his namesake Basilica built.<\/p>\n

At\u00a0some point the relics\u00a0were even smuggled to the orders of Federico Barbarossa and brought to Colonia.\u00a0In 1906 Cardinal Ferrari had a small part returned; it is\u00a0now preserved in a\u00a0urn. One can notice the presence of the Kings in the belltower, which is topped\u00a0by an eight-point star \u2013 symbolizing the shooting star that led\u00a0the Kings to\u00a0Bethlehem \u2013 instead of the cross. If you had expected to see all the Three Kings\u00a0in Sant\u2019Eustorgio and now feel disappointed, make up with a visit to\u00a0Cappella\u00a0Portinari, Vincenzo Foppa\u2019s masterpiece: at the center there is the beautiful\u00a0Arca di San Pietro Martire. It is said that before dying, he dipped his finger\u00a0in\u00a0his own blood and wrote the words: \u201cI believe\u201d.<\/p>\n
